My Background

Michael McGrath was elected a T.D. for Cork South Central at the first attempt on 24th May 2007 and was re-elected on 25th February 2011.

Michael was appointed Fianna Fáil’s Spokesperson on Finance by Party Leader Micheál Martin in August 2011.

Prior to his election to the Dáil, Michael was elected to Cork County Council in June 2004 for the Carrigaline electoral area. He first became an elected representative, aged 22, in 1999 when he was elected to Passage West Town Council. Michael has been involved in the Fianna Fáil organisation since 1997 and has served at most levels in the Party, including being a member of the party’s National Youth Committee. He was educated in St Peter’s Community School, Passage West, and secured a First Class Honours Commerce Degree in UCC.

Michael qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in Cork City in 2001. He went on to work as a Financial Controller of a medium sized enterprise in Cork. He left a senior post in UCC as Head of Management Information and Systems in February 2005 to concentrate on his constituency work. Michael resigned from the post completely and therefore does not have a position to return to.
